PROJECTS

Da Street Shop Small Campaign

During the second lockdown, which took place in 2021, I set myself a project to promote shopping small and supporting local businesses.  I also wanted to boost the morale of the local shops after such a hard year.  I decided to illustrate every local shop, hospitality and beauty shop front on 'Da Street' (Lerwick's Commercial Street).  Even though I couldn't include every business (such as the larger multiples, charity shops and businesses without obvious shop fronts) I received a lot of amazing feedback from shop owners and a general positive response.  I then decided to gift every illustration to the shop owners.  The final piece was an A3 art print including every illustration.  This was available to buy on a pre-order basis and was my most successful product launch to date.

Between Islands Resource Pack

Available here
Commissioned to do some illustrations for a children's resource pack, educating kids about the Scottish islands of Shetland, Orkney and the Western Isles.  The pack includes activities and easy to understand information about the culture, landscape, wildlife and folklore of the islands.  The watercolour illustrations were done by myself as well as the colouring pages at the end.  The resource pack is available online for free and will be produced in a physical format to be given to primary schools across the islands.

Intersport (Lerwick)

I was asked to create the logo and first designs of a tourism aimed line of products for the Intersport shop in Lerwick, Shetland.  The brand, named Njuggle (a water horse myth of the islands), wanted graphic, contrasting designs with a touch of the Celtic and Viking history the islands is known for.  I created these designs that are now on mugs, coasters and clothing such as t-shirts and hoodies.

Trend Bible

Assigned to design prints for Trend Bible's A/W 20/21 trend book.  I was given the theme 'Cabinet of Curiosities' and a colour palette of dark, rich colours with hints of gold.  I went to Abbotsford House in the Scottish Borders which is where I gathered most of my inspiration.  I particularly loved the antique furniture with 'claws' and 'paws' which reminded me of Alice in Wonderland.  I also loved the dense, detailed wallpaper found in the house.

Joules

I was assigned a brief from Joules with the theme 'Halcyon Haze' for a Spring/Summer collection.  I particularly looked into a nostalgic seaside theme, such as the striped deck chairs and the rockpool exploring, most people experienced as kids.  I pushed myself to step away from the detailed graphite pencil work and did a combination of bold painterly stripes and pen work.  All for interior applications such as soft furnishings and kitchenware.

Romo New Designers Entry

Since New Designers 2020 was cancelled, there were a range of awards available to be entered digitally.  The brief for the Romo award included the theme 'Reawaken' which symbolised the emerging from lockdown.  The idea of this confinement reminded me of a Scottish folklore story including a selkie (a seal that can shed its skin to become human). This story resulted in the selkie being trapped on land, not being able to return to the sea to be back with her family and to a place where she is free. I wanted to convey the freedom the selkie was yearning.
